Comfort Dolls -  knit or crochet, send to children in Africa with AIDS/HIV or whose family has it. These soft dolls are packed between the breakable medical supplies and then distributed. One of the churches in Dunnellon is making these. I will determine who so a contact can be had. The dolls are mailed to ICROSS (The International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering) in Canada.

Women of the Bible Fashion Show - a fun show of 13 women of the bible in contemporary and traditional dress. Use you imagination to interpret the clothing. Ask members who they think the woman is. Lots of fun. A photo page of costumes used at St George is included, but you can adjust them for what your members had. St George combined this with a lunch for a fundraiser along with a small silent auction.

For the past two Easter Sundays the ladies of our church have sponsored an Easter Sunday Brunch   This is a Pot Luck Affair after the late service.  Parishioners selected dishes to pass and two of our members furnished a ham and a smoked turkey.  Single people, entire families, members and their neighbors and friends and couples attended.  The first year was had 36 people in attendance and this past Easter we had 48.  This is a great outreach to our members and the community.  We also have a basket available to collect donations for the Central Brevard Sharing Center which is our area Food Bank.

Mothering Sunday - an old Anglican Tradition  click here for more recipe variations and other descriptions (including this one)

Simnel cakes are called such because of the fine flour (Latin "simila") they were made of.   These cakes were baked and sold on Lenten Sundays in both England and France.   The French baked their cakes muffin-size and drew sugar crosses on the top. These were their equivalent of the English Hot Cross Bun.

In England, the Simnel cake is especially associated with the 4th Sunday in Lent called Refreshment, Rose, or Mothering Sunday.   That day was the older version of Mother's Day.   Children of all ages were expected to pay a formal visit to their mothers and to bring a Simnel cake as a gift.   In return, the mothers gave their children a special blessing.   This custom was so well-established that masters were required to give servants enough time off to visit out-of-town mothers - provided the trip did not exceed 5 days!

The Simnel cake is also associated with "Holy Humour Sunday" or "Laughter Sunday" which is celebrated in certain places on the 4th Sunday in Lent, especially in North America, where "Mothering Sunday" has given way to "Mother's Day" (see Laughter Sunday)

A Recipe For Simnel Cake

Ingredients

  1 ½ Cups butter
  4  Cups flour
  8 eggs
  1 teaspoon salt

  4  Cups sugar
2/3 Cup grated lemon & orange peel
  2  Cups currants
8 oz. (or more) almond paste

Mixing & Baking Directions

Cream butter and sugar until smooth.
Add eggs singly, beating after each one
Sift and add flour and salt.
Dust peel and currants with flour and add to batter.

Line 12" x 15" greased pan with waxpaper.

 Pour in ½ batter.
Bake at 300 degrees for one hour.
 May be iced if desired.
Cut cake into small 1" squares as it is very rich. (Freezes well.) This is dense cookie-like version and delicious!
